Russia to « feel confident”, you need a “strong rear” in the form of a developed democracy, said President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with the head of the Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova. Part of the meeting was broadcast by the Russia 24 TV channel.

“In order to feel confident, first of all you need to have a strong rear, which means— secure, developing, democratic political system. And the elections, I hope, will contribute to this, I have no doubt at all, — he said.

Putin and Pamfilova discussed the upcoming election campaign: on September 11, on a single voting day, governors will be elected in 15 regions, in six — representatives of regional legislative assemblies, at 11— representatives of city legislative assemblies, in Moscow— deputies of councils of municipal formations. In some subjects, it will be possible to take part in voting online.

As the head of the CEC stated, preparations for the elections are “in full swing”. The main goal of the work Pamfilova called the increase of “confidence in the elections themselves, and directly in the electoral system”, the main principle— maximum openness of voting.

“I want to honestly say that this transparency and openness is an order of magnitude higher than in those unfriendly countries that consider themselves democratic,” — she stressed.

In the Democracy Index, 2021, which is compiled by experts from the British magazine The Economist, Russia ranked 124th. In the ranking, it is between Ethiopia and Nigeria.
