The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are trying to damage the cooling circuit of the Zaporozhye NPP, Volodymyr Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, said on the air of the Soloviev Live channel.

He claims that the Ukrainian military fired on him already several dozen shots from heavy weapons.

“It is not as protected, of course, as the reactor itself, and in principle to kill it, violate its integrity and prevent [contribute to] high-quality cooling of the reactor, our opponents»,— said Rogov (TASS quote).

A failure of the reactor's cooling system could cause it to overheat, the CAA spokesman added.

“If that happens, <…> then, in fact, it will no longer be a “dirty bomb”, but a real nuclear bomb. <…> The Chernobyl nuclear power plant may seem like just flowers, & mdash; he noted.

Another vulnerable part of the NPP Rogov called nuclear fuel waste, which, according to him, is also fired upon by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. One of the shells fell ten meters from the nuclear fuel container, he claims.

The reactor itself is so strong that it can withstand a 10km drop from a height of 10km with full fuel tanks, a spokesman for the region's pro-Russian authorities said. “Those who say there is no danger are talking about the reactor itself, the reactors are very well protected. There, in meters, reinforced concrete is the thickness of the walls. <…> To destroy the reactor, you need to use tactical nuclear weapons,— added Rogov.

Zaporozhye NPP — the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, located in the city of Energodar, Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. The southern and central parts of this region, in particular Energodar and the territory of the nuclear power plant itself, are controlled by Russian forces. Ukrainian operators work at the station.

After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the parties repeatedly accused each other of strikes on the territory of the nuclear power plant.

At the request of Roskomnadzor, RBC provides data on the details of the military operation in Ukraine based on information from Russian official sources.

The last time the CAA reported on shelling was the day before. Then, Rogov argued, in two hours the Ukrainian side delivered 25 strikes on Energodar and the area of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant from M777 howitzers, which the United States supplied to Ukraine. The pro-Russian authorities of the Zaporozhye region called for a ceasefire regime in the area of the nuclear power plant.

More than 40 countries, including the states of the European Union, the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Finland, Japan and others, have asked Russia to “immediately withdraw its armed forces and all other unauthorized personnel from the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP”; and return it to Ukraine. Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, called this statement propagandistic. It does not mention the shelling of nuclear power plants, which, the diplomat is convinced, “encourages Kyiv to continue rocket and artillery strikes on the plant, which are fraught with a very serious nuclear catastrophe.”

Moscow insists that IAEA specialists visit the nuclear power plant. However, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, “the Western community, together with the Kyiv regime,” this visit is prevented. The G7 countries, in turn, stated that the presence of the Russian military at the facility hinders the trip of specialists.
