Sergei Shoigu congratulated the Russians on the Day of the Geographer and opened the Russian Geographical Society festival
On Thursday, August 18, the President of the Russian Geographical (RGO) Society Sergey Shoigu congratulated the Russians on the Day of the Geographer in a video message, as well as Happy birthday to the Russian Geographical Society – one of the oldest geographical societies in the world. On this day, the V Festival of the Russian Geographical Society opens in Moscow.
Speaking about the Day of the Geographer and the birthday of the Russian Geographical Society, Shoigu, who has headed the Russian Geographical Society since 2009, said: “This is a day for all who are members of the Russian Geographical Society, for those who love our country, love to travel, for those who every day have a desire to expand their horizons and look a little further, learn a little more not only about geography – rivers and lakes, mountains and deserts, about the animal world, learn about those who inhabit our country to find out how they live”.
The Fifth Festival of the Russian Geographical Society will last 10 days. During this time in the capital it will be possible to listen to lectures by travelers, members of the Russian Geographical Society, photographers, scientists, journalists, writers, participate in master classes, watch performances by ensembles from various parts of Russia. In addition, on the opening day of the Festival, the names of the winners of the prestigious photo contest “The Most Beautiful Country” will be announced, in which about 6,000 authors competed for victory, submitting more than 46,000 photographs to the authoritative commission.
