Russia and Kazakhstan are actively interacting at the level of various departments, in particular, the military ministries of the two countries are preparing joint exercises within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Sochi. Part of the meeting was broadcast by the Russia 24 TV channel.

“Our ministries and departments are actively working, the intergovernmental commission is working actively, the ministries of foreign affairs, the ministries of defense are preparing various events together, including joint exercises within the framework of the CSTO, and so on,” — Putin said.

He also noted that trade between Moscow and Nur-Sultan is growing, in particular, over the five months of this year— by almost 9%, as well as the amount of investment. “Russia is in first place among the trade and economic partners of Kazakhstan, <…> in all directions, work is moving quite actively, in a positive way, & mdash; Putin noted.

According to Tokayev, last year the volume of trade between the countries amounted to $24.5 billion, and in 2022, cooperation continues to develop successfully. The Kazakh leader also noted the interaction of the parties on international platforms, such as the UN. Tokayev recalled that this year his country is chairing the CIS, and expressed hope for Putin's personal participation in the Commonwealth summit, which will be held in October.

“The specifics of the geopolitical situation prompts us to need to 'synchronize watches' in order to possibly give additional instructions to governments.” in connection with new tasks, Tokayev noted. He noted that now there are no grounds for “pessimistic forecasts”; on the future of Russian-Kazakh cooperation.

At the beginning of the meeting, the heads of state shook hands and embraced. Both noted that they were glad to meet.

He called the republics “quasi-states”; and pointed out that Nur-Sultan does not recognize them.

In addition, Tokayev's press service reported that during the SPIEF he refused to accept the Russian Order of Alexander Nevsky, because he did not want to receive foreign awards before the end of his term. However, the Kremlin denied any intention to reward the Kazakh leader.

Another problem has since arisen in relations between Russia and Kazakhstan: in July, a Russian court ruled to suspend the activities of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which transported two-thirds of Kazakhstan's oil exports. , including through Russia. The reason for this decision was the identified environmental violations at production facilities.

After that, Tokayev instructed to diversify oil supplies, including using a route that does not pass through the territory of Russia. The court soon changed the decision, imposing a fine of 200 thousand rubles on CPC.
