The trial of Lukashenko's enemies presented a motley vinaigrette

The Minsk Regional Court began to consider a criminal case on a conspiracy to seize state power in Belarus. There are five defendants. These are Yuri Zenkovich, Alexander Feduta, Grigory Kostusev, Olga Golubovich and Denis Kravchuk. The defendants could face up to 12 years in prison.

Yury Zenkovich is a Belarusian opposition politician and American lawyer. Has US citizenship. In 2003-2007 he was a member of the Minsk Regional Council. He is a “locomotive” in this group, a whole “bouquet” of accusations has been brought against him: a conspiracy to seize power, the creation of an extremist formation and leadership of such a formation, public calls for the seizure of power, distribution of materials containing such appeals using the Internet, inciting social enmity and discord on the basis of a different social affiliation. Zenkovich studied in Poland and Ukraine, received an M.A. in American Law from Fordham University in New York, and has lived in the United States since 2007. In 2017, the BNF (Belarusian People's Front) nominated him as a party candidate for the presidency of Belarus. Acquaintances characterize him as a man of an adventurous warehouse. In social networks, he openly called for the overthrow of Lukashenka and even kept a record in the resistance units. President Lukashenko claims he is connected to the US intelligence agencies. This is by far the most serious figure among the “conspirators”.

Zenkovich and another defendant, Alexander Feduta, were detained by the FSB in Moscow in April 2021 and transferred to Minsk. It remains a mystery why Zenkovich came to Moscow at all, fully aware of the danger of such a trip. It is possible that he, like Feduta, was purposefully lured out, and this whole story with the “conspiracy” is an operation of the special services. Because it is very difficult to assume that a 57-year-old literary critic, Pushkinist, a teacher, by the way, of the Russian language and literature, who is clearly overweight, could take part in the plot to kill Lukashenka and his sons. He does not look like a conspirator in any way, and even his admission of guilt does not convince.

Alexander Feduta helped Lukashenko come to power. He entered his first campaign headquarters and became his first press secretary and biographer. He left his team back in 1995. Since then, he has been in opposition, although he has never shown a propensity for violent actions.

The 65-year-old head of the Belarusian Popular Front, Grigory Kostusev, also bears little resemblance to a militant. He and Feduta are accused of conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means (part 1 of article 357 of the Criminal Code). Kostusev was detained by the KGB of Belarus on April 12, 2021, he was at his home in the city of Shklov.

Olga Golubovich and Denis Kravchuk are accused of active participation in group actions that grossly violate public order and involve obvious disobedience to the lawful demands of government officials, which resulted in the disruption of transport, enterprises, institutions or organizations, in the absence of signs of a more serious crime (part 1 of Art. 342 of the Criminal Code). 43-year-old Olga Golubovich is an employee of Zenkovich, she worked in his Minsk office. Denis Kravchuk is a nuclear physicist by profession, but worked as a truck driver. He was an opposition activist and an election observer. According to one version, during the 2020 presidential election, he and Zenkovich spent 10 days of arrest in the same cell.

So far, it seems that everything revolves around the figure of the American lawyer Zenkovich. It is possible that he really planned some kind of conspiracy, or maybe they decided to neutralize him preventively, as a potentially dangerous figure. It is also possible that he will be used as a trump card in bargaining with “American partners” or he will go for an exchange. Unless, of course, it really represents some value for the US intelligence agencies.
