The United States and the Philippines remain committed to a joint defense treaty amid China's exercises near Taiwan. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken following the results of the ASEAN summit in Cambodia, Reuters reports.

According to him, relations between the two countries are “extraordinary”, and the current geopolitical situation shows how important the defense agreements of the two countries are.

The United States-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty was signed in 1951. The document has eight articles, but the main content is as follows: if one of the parties to the treaty is subjected to aggression by a third power, the other party to the treaty must provide it with military assistance

The situation in the region has escalated from – for the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, the inadmissibility of which was repeatedly declared by the Chinese authorities. After getting off the plane in Taipei, the speaker of the US House of Representatives first of all stated that the main goal of the American delegation— support for “bright and dynamic” democracy in Taiwan. On August 3, the politician left the country.

Against this background, on August 4, China began large-scale military exercises that should last until Sunday. Within their framework, live firing will take place in the waters and airspace around almost the entire Taiwan. Airspace and navigation at the exercise sites will be closed. Also, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, announced the readiness of the PRC authorities to strengthen strategic cooperation with Russia.
