The international human rights organization Amnesty International, which previously published a report on Ukraine's violation of humanitarian law and the rules of war, apologized for the “suffering and anger” that the report may have caused. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the press service of the organization.
«Amnesty International deeply regrets the suffering and anger caused by our report on the fighting methods of the Ukrainian military»,— said in the message.
The organization emphasized that the main priority in the preparation of such reports is to ensure the protection of civilians. “That was our sole purpose in releasing this last piece of research. While we do not repudiate the conclusions of the report, we deplore the pain caused by the report,— concluded in Amnesty International.
On August 4, the organization published a report in which it said that the Ukrainian military is deploying military equipment and weapons in schools, hospitals and residential areas, turning them into military targets. In this way, they endanger the lives of the civilian population, violating international humanitarian law and the laws of warfare, human rights activists said in the conclusions.
After the publication of the report, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the human rights organization of trying to “pardon” Russia and “shift the responsibility onto the victim”, and the director of the Ukrainian office of Amnesty International, Oksana Pokalchuk, announced her dismissal. According to her, she still had hope that the Ukrainian side would be able to convey its position to the organization, after which the text would be deleted, and a new one would appear instead. “Today I realized that this will not happen,” — she added.
Despite this, Amnesty International on August 6 declared the organization's commitment to the report's findings. “We consider it fundamentally important to respond impartially. <…> Ignoring the violations committed by either side in any conflict will not be persuasive reporting on the state of human rights,— human rights activists pointed out.

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense repeatedly pointed out that the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine place their positions and equipment in residential and social buildings. For example, on August 4, the department reported that the Ukrainian military used for this purpose a school in Novaya Vodolaga, Kharkiv region, a technical school in Slavyansk, the DPR, and a children's music school in Varvarovka, Mykolaiv region.
The Russian embassy in the United States previously positively assessed Amnesty International report and noted that it should help the audience to draw the “right conclusions”. “The resonance around the publication proves that it is becoming increasingly difficult to hush up the truth. The criminal Kyiv regime has no sympathy for its own population, — Russian diplomats pointed out.
